Teaching Online Safety to Kids

Online Security is the ability to detect online threats and to understand how to prevent them. This includes safeguarding your personal information, avoiding malware and recognizing illegal or harmful content.

Cyber security is essential for students, who increasingly spend their lives online. They should be aware of the real risks to their privacy and security, such as cyberbullying or identity theft. They should also be aware of how reckless or careless Internet behavior can lead to serious consequences. A New Hampshire politician, for instance, was fired because he posted inappropriate pictures and comments on social media regarding his opponents.

Whether they’re shopping, gaming or chatting with a friend, there are plenty of things that can go wrong. For instance it’s easy to click on a malicious link in an email text message, online advertisement that can create a malware infection on a device. Once an insulting or embarrassing comment or image is posted, it is nearly impossible to remove.

To help children understand the importance of cyber safety, teachers can incorporate a variety fun activities into their lessons. Students can make an animated digital cartoon about the dangers of bullying or meet someone online in person to spark discussions in the classroom and help develop critical thinking and media literacy. In the same way, creating a mock news article could be a good method for students to develop their research and writing skills while learning about cyber safety.
