Types of Steel Materials

Steel is the foundation for heavy equipment, household items, and tools. It plays a crucial part in manufacturing and construction. However there are a variety of steels that are created equal. The type of steel you select for a project can dramatically influence its strength and durability.

While all steels start as iron and carbon the amount of impurities and other additions determine how each one is classified. This is what makes each type distinctive for specific uses.

Low-carbon steels, which are available in a variety of forms, are the most widely employed steels by metal fabricators. They are found in beams, pipes, and other structural components. They’re also perfect for welded fabrications as they can be easily formed and shaped without losing its strength or quality.

Medium-carbon steels contain less than 1.75 percent carbon content, and are well-known for their toughness. They are the most suitable choice thermally insulated cells for cookware and durable tools. They’re also employed to create parts for cars and other mechanical equipment.

High-carbon steels are utilized to make parts that require a strong strength and resistance to corrosion. These include anchor bolts rods, and tools.

Alloy steels are flexible and can be adapted to meet the requirements of any use. For example, tungsten increases the strength of temperature and wear resistance of high-strength steels. Chromium enhances the resistance to heat of stainless steels and improves their ductility. Molybdenum on another hand, improves the hardness and toughness of alloy steels.
